Stand up Against Property Rights Theft and Government Mandated “Smart Growth”
Tuesday, September 4, 7 PM County Administration Building, Elkton
Your help is needed. Our commissioners are in the process of implementing a tier map required by SB 236, which was passed by the state legislature last session. Commissioner Broomell, currently supported by Commissioners Dunn and Mullin, have argued for a map that places more land (54% of the county) in the restrictive tier 4 zone than was originally proposed by our local planning department. This represents a violation of the 5th and 14th amendments to the Constitution. Our local commissioners, not the state, have the authority under SB 236 to draw the maps. Please email the commissioners and urge them to submit the least restrictive map to the state, and protect the rights of citizens they were elected to represent. Please urge Delegate Smigiel (410- 841-3555) to attend the September 4 hearing and stand for property rights. Smigiel endorsed and slated with Commissioners Dunn and Mullin, who are leaning toward a more restrictive map. Let Smigiel know that his blogging and speeches about property rights in Annapolis are meaningless if he is unwilling to take a stand locally where he can actually have an impact with those he has helped elect. Implementation of this map will affect everyone, regardless of what tier you fall into. Not only does government taking of property rights without due process or compensation violate the principles of liberty, government manipulation of the housing market has potential to affect current property values, the price of houses, future taxes, and the liberty of the next generation.
Government is effectively locking down land forever, so that our children will be robbed of choices in how and where they live in the future, both by cost constraints and lack of property available, except in government sanctioned "smart" urban communities. This goes against the foundational principles of America and is an attack on the American Dream by those who believe they are better equipped to make decisions for the citizens than the citizens are themselves.
There will be a public hearing on the tier map on Tuesday, September 4, at 7 PM. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend and comment.
Farmers and concerned citizens protested the map at the commissioner meeting on Tuesday, August 21. To see the video of the tractor rally and the protest, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8s0g215IBSE&feature=relmfu
