A couple of years ago, it was reported that the Czech president called environmentalism the new communism. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SJsA7NLAaM . While I understood the sentiment of his statement, until very recently when I began to study this issue in light of "sustainable development" legislation, I didn't fully realize the implications or the full truth behind his statements.
The more I learn about this issue, the more I realize that this is the greatest threat to our freedom we are currently facing. Other issues we are confronting, such as taxes, currency manipulation, border security, entitlements, unfriendly business practices, etc. are all bits and pieces of an overall agenda that goes beyond the borders of our country. Once implemented, we won't be able to seek out a free land as the pilgrims did, because there will be no place to go. If you think about this as a story with a plot structure, the individual issues we are fighting for or against are like the rising action or complications, and the implementation of the sustainable development agenda is the climax, or the turning point of the story that will transform life as we know it.
The root of sustainable development is Agenda 21, the UN charter which outlines the goals for sustainable development. Examination of the charter reveals that the sustainable development plan goes beyond much more than just being responsible stewards of our earth. It uses environmentalism as an excuse to dissolve national sovereignty and implement international policies and control every aspect of our lives including food production and consumption, wealth redistribution, our access to healthcare as well as the type of care we receive, education, how and where we live, and how and where we travel. The history of the drafting of the Agenda 21 plan is examined HERE . A few key pieces of information from the linked article about the origins of this movement and its end game are:
- "...in April 1991, fourteen months before Earth Summit, Prince Charles held a private two day international conference aboard the royal yacht Britannia, moored off the coast of Brazil. His goal was to bring together key international figures in an attempt to achieve a degree of harmony between the various countries that would gather at the Summit. Al Gore was present, along with senior officials from the United Nations and the World Bank."

- Maurice Strong, one of the key figures in drafting the Agenda 21 plan, said "The concept of national sovereignty has been an immutable, indeed sacred, principle of international relations. It is a principle which will yield only slowly and reluctantly to the new imperatives of global environmental cooperation. It is simply not feasible for sovereignty to be exercised unilaterally by individual nation states, however powerful. The global community must be assured of environmental security."
- Strong also said, "Current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class - involving high meat intake, use of fossil fuels, appliances, air-conditioning, and suburban housing - are not sustainable. A shift is necessary which will require a vast strengthening of the multilateral system, including the United Nations."
Many would believe that implementation of this grand scheme would be virtually impossible. However, this is already being implemented in a variety of ways, through increasing fuel costs, government regulation and special favors to those who move this agenda forward, through manipulation of currency, and through education of children. When kids leave our public schools, they generally know very little about the natural rights addressed in the U.S. Constitution, but they can teach a lecture on environmental footprints. Our children are continually being bombarded with the message that humans are parasites to the earth and it is their responsibility to save the earth from inevitable destruction by people. Disney Channel and Nickelodeon have devoted much of their programming in recent years to promoting the environmental agenda. Educational materials being drafted by none other than the World Bank can be seen HERE. The U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development has as its goal to "Leverage the UN Decade to foster education for sustainable development in the United States." The Maryland Department of Planning has its own website devoted to a smart growth plan complete with Coloring Pages to prepare kids to accept the restrictions placed upon them by sustainable living.
"Sustainable" communities are sprouting up and zoning laws are being used to limit the choices Americans have in how and where they live. One such community, the Woodlands Community in Perryville is described as a "master-planned community." Cul de sacs are becoming a thing of the past (http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/michael-cannell/cannell/death-dead-... ). Local zoning practices often invoke environmental goals and the desire for open space to infringe upon the property rights of individuals. Even worse, state governments have attempted to pass legislation which will take zoning oversight away from local government. Who is funding sustainable communities? You are, through federal grants.
We often think about the behavior of many of our officials, and the pressure that they receive to do so many things which seem blatantly foolish and against the best interests of the U.S. Why, during 6 years of a Republican administration, was there no advancement made to drill in the US? Why does the size and scope of government seem to increase, regardless of who is in power? Why is nothing being done to reduce fuel prices? Why are state and local governments attempting to pass more laws to restrict how and where people live (Remember the proposed septic ban by O'Malley and his wind farm plan that would have mandated utility companies to invest in wind power, which would drive up electric prices)? Why is the government so unwilling to stop the flow of illegal immigrants across our borders, yet they have no trouble molesting American citizens at airports? Our current world, in many aspects, seem to be turned upside down. Common sense seems to have left the building decades ago. However, in an attempt to bring Agenda 21 to fruition, the seemingly counterproductive policies show the "method to their madness." Increasing gas prices will force people into having less choices and resources available for consumption; they will also encourage people to move into "sustainable" communities. Less economic resources and smaller living space in sustainable living communities will discourage people from reproducing, and thus assist with population control.
Locally, many Non-governmental organizations and local governments have joined ICLEI, the local implementation organization of UN Agenda 21. They can be seen HERE. Queen Annes County is a member of ICLEI, and members pay dues to this international organization. Eric Wargotz, a Republican who ran for Senate against Barbara Mikulsi in 2010, signed onto ICLEI into 2010 when he was president of the Board of commissioners in Queen Annes County. However, the Carroll County MD Board of Commissioners was the first local government to withdraw from ICLEI. Carroll County Commissioner, Richard Rothschild has been very vocal in spreading the word about the intent of Agenda 21 and ICLEI.
This issue is one which we can not afford to be uneducated about. We must be aware of what is planned, and we must be vigilant in watching for ways that Agenda 21 is being promoted and implemented in our communities. We must be aware of the information that is being taught to our children in environmental science, and we must teach them to know the difference between being good stewards and resigning our natural rights to "master planners" in the name of sustainability. We need to know the details of the plan and be able to present arguments against it. We need to be knowledgeable enough to frame the argument around personal liberty, and not allow the proponents of this to frame it around "saving the planet", or global warming.
